ElmerEmail Usage Instructions
ElmerEmail is platform agnostic, it can be used with ANYTHING that can send and receive email. All you have to have is an email account and some way to send and receive email from it. This could be as rugged as a WinLINK over HF VARA, as modern as a Gmail account on your iPhone, or as technical as a satellite messenger.
Because ElmerEmail is intended for use with low bandwidth and/or pay-per-message systems, our reply messages are intentionally short. However, ElmerEmail also has many “options/settings” that allow you to customize different aspects of the service to fit your specific needs. The goal is to build a system that can be entirely used with just email, though this website is available for people to quickly change options when they have high bandwidth and web browsing capabilities.
Here is the most important thing to remember about ElmerEmail:
This is the email address to which you will send messages to work with the system.
Typically, requests and commands sent to ElmerEmail are done in the "subject" line of your email. For most things, the body of the email is ignored, so you may leave it blank to save on bandwidth and transmission time.
Once the email is received by our servers, our software will read the subject line, prepare a response, and send it back to THE SAME EMAIL ADDRESS from which you sent the request
Note: to stop frivolous messages and spam, some off-grid email services require you to "allow" emails from specific addresses. To use ElmerEmail with one of those system, please make sure the address "reply@elmeremail.com" in your services "whitelist" or "allowed senders" settings
A full list of available commands and examples are located in the "Commands" menu above, but one quick example would be to send an email to "reply@elmeremail.com" with just the word "test" in the subject field. This will trigger a simple test message from ElmerEmail, and will confirm that the system is working for you and nothing is being blocked. Another example would be to send an email to "reply@elmeremail.com" with just the word "help" in the subject. This will send back to you a help email with available commands and usage instructions
Different commands have different formats for requesting information, but typically your subject line should look like this when sending commands:
command subcommand argument argument argument
Not all commands have subcommands, and not all commands/subcommands require arguments. Take some to the read over the "Commands" section, and don't be afraid to do some experimenting. Each command will have an example on how to use it
ElmerEmail is a living service, and we are adding new commands all the time. You may check this website for a current command guide, or simply use the command "help" to get the latest information.
